Datacentre Migration
Datacentre migrations and transformations are an occasional but unavoidable pain for medium and large organisations. They pose their own particular risks, some of which are extremely hard to mitigate, but also offer the opportunity to upgrade equipment and embrace new technologies such as virtualisation. Proper assessment of risk and mitigation of the greatest threats to business continuity are the primary objectives, and are founded on good planning. A further key factor in ensuring a smooth change is the need for a robust, repeatable process to execute the migration and help with stakeholder management. 4sl has a wealth of experience in these areas, having managed and delivered several complex projects for our clients.

As indicated in the diagram above, migrations can be approached in three ways:
- Physical Migration
Equipment moves from one location to another
- Logical Migration
The workload moves, but the physical assets remain
- Transformation
The move encompasses both the transfer of workload from one location to another, as well as upgrading to new equipment, new technologies (e.g. virtualisation, O/S upgrade) or adoption of hosted or cloud services
Each migration approach has risks, costs and duration characteristics associated with it. Determining the right approach depends on first understanding two factors: what are the drivers for the initiative, and what are the capabilities of and constraints on the organisation to carry out the change?
4sl brings these factors together to build a clear rationale for the proposed migration option before developing the migration plan. Find out how we used this method to help a global Investment Bank carry out a successful transformation program - visit our case study library.
